Kerala Assembly polls 2026 | LDF seeks third term, UDF readies to end 10-year drought; BJP a bystander

The 2026 Kerala Assembly elections are shaping up to be a tight race, with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) seeking to secure its third consecutive term despite facing internal dissent and an increasingly competitive landscape. The United Democratic Front (UDF), out of power for two terms, is buoyed by its strong performance in the 2025 local body elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a focus on ending what it perceives as the "revolving door" politics in Kerala, aims to capitalize on its success in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and its control of the prestigious Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation. The upcoming elections will be influenced by several factors, including the ongoing war in West Asia and economic uncertainty caused by fuel shortages. The significant presence of Keralites employed in the Gulf, a substantial portion of the electorate, could impact voting behavior. Additionally, the Muslim community, comprising roughly 26.56% of the population according to the 2011 Census, may be influenced by events like the attacks on Gaza and the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. The LDF, known for its stance on Palestine and criticism of the BJP's handling of Iran, is positioning itself as a champion of Muslim interests. The election is also expected to be closely contested between the LDF's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Opposition Leader V. D.
