Hunger Strike Protests Erupt: Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalized After 3 Weeks, Demanding Minister's Resignation
On Monday, July 20, 2026, Hindus for Human Rights activists demonstrated in New York and San Jose to support Sonam Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi over NEET exam irregularities. They demanded Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation and raised slogans against the Indian government. Similar protests occurred outside the Indian High Commission in London and Embassy in Dublin, as stated by Hindus for Human Rights on Tuesday. Wangchuk was hospitalized after three weeks of fasting. Opposition parties supported him with protests in Delhi.
Boat drifts 25 days, 140 missing or dead, 38 survivors found in Mauritania
The UNHCR reported that a boat carrying refugees and migrants from Africa drifted for 25 days before arriving at the port of Nouadhibou, Mauritania, with 38 survivors and over 140 dead or missing. The vessel left Bafuloto in The Gambia on June 14 and was rescued on July 18. Among the survivors were two children who lost all family members during the journey. Another person died on a different boat that disembarked on July 14. Mauritania’s coastguard estimated that 122 people are missing, with the boat running out of fuel after leaving The Gambia with 160 people. The UNHCR called this route to the Canary Islands one of the world’s deadliest due to long distances and overcrowded boats.
