Kerala seeks withdrawal of ‘VB G RAM G’ Bill replacing MGNREGS
The bill could harm citizens by reducing access to crucial employment guarantees.
Kerala’s Minister for Local Self-Governments, M.B. Rajesh, criticized the new Union government bill replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), calling it a “declaration of war against ordinary people.” The proposed legislation would place an additional financial burden on Kerala, requiring it to bear 40% of the expenditure and potentially jeopardizing livelihoods for thousands. Rajesh argued that the bill undermines States’ interests, abolishes the right to work, and shifts responsibility from the Centre to the State. He urged the state's Members of Parliament to join the fight against the new bill.
