Crumbling of Awadh’s heritage amidst monument encroachments
A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) highlights the concerning state of protected monuments in Uttar Pradesh. The report found that 31 centrally protected monuments are untraceable, with only 31 monuments having proper ownership documentation and 96 being encroached upon. Heritage activists express worry over the disappearance of these historical sites and the potential loss of Awadhi culture, which is intertwined with the architecture and traditions of these structures. The report also found that the ASI has not been adequately enforcing existing laws and regulations, leading to inadequate planning and documentation for conservation efforts. Experts advocate for stronger legislation, including a state heritage law, to address this issue and protect these valuable cultural assets.
