A study by the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History revealed that endangered lion-tailed macaques (LTM) are forming unusually large groups in non-protected private plantations in the Valparai plateau.

The study monitored LTM populations between February 2021 and August 2024. It recorded a group of 117 LTMs at Puthuthottam, significantly higher than the mean group size of less than 20 individuals observed in protected areas of the Western Ghats.
