On Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to support farmers facing severe El Niño-induced drought conditions. With a 69% rainfall deficit in July and expected 35-40% below-normal rainfall for the season, he emphasized timely advisories, universal crop insurance, and mitigation efforts. Officials projected that 2.78 lakh hectares of cotton and 1.07 lakh hectares of paddy could be affected across all districts, with some facing acute drought conditions. Mr. Naidu instructed officials to maximize Vamsadhara river waters, explore borewell irrigation, and launch awareness campaigns from August 3 to encourage farmers to shift to alternative crops like red gram, black gram, and castor.
