Kolkata Police prohibit gatherings in front of Victoria House, deny nod for Trinamool factions’ Martyrs Day rally
Prohibitory orders restricting gatherings for 60 days raise concerns about freedom of assembly.
Kolkata Police have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, restricting public gatherings, rallies, meetings, and demonstrations across parts of central Kolkata, including the Esplanade area. The order will remain in effect for 60 days, from July 2 to August 30, 2026. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has challenged the party to hold its annual rally at Brigade Parade Grounds as it did in 2011, while Trinamool Congress factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee have both sought police permission for their respective rallies in front of Victoria House. The Kolkata Police have registered a First Information Report against several Trinamool leaders for allegedly blocking traffic during a site inspection on June 28, 2026.
