Sikh MLAs, Cabinet Ministers appear before Akal Takht over anti-sacrilege law

Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, head of the Akal Takht, summoned all Sikh MLAs and Cabinet Ministers in Punjab to appear before the Akal Takht in Amritsar on June 29, 2026. The Jathedar objected to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 for allegedly being enacted without consulting the Sikh Panth and interfering with religious affairs. The Akal Takht has asked the state government to remove certain provisions from the law, claiming they are "against the Guru Granth Sahib, the Khalsa Panth and the sentiments of the 'Sangat'." The summoned MLAs and Ministers were asked to submit their views in writing on the matter, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann not being summoned.
