Police deny permission for NREGA activists’ Jantar Mantar protest
The Delhi Police denied permission for a protest planned by the NREGA Sangarsh Morcha, citing existing guidelines requiring 10 days' notice. Activists and Parliamentarians gathered at Jantar Mantar in a symbolic gesture of dissent against the repeal of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Economists Jean Dreze and Rajendran Narayanan, along with MPs Sasikanth Senthil, S. Murasoli, Thanga Tamil Selvan, Bikash Bhattacharya, and Raja Ram Singh, criticized the denial of permission, calling it a violation of democratic rights. The All India Kisan Sabha called for protests against the new legislation, which will replace MGNREGA, while the Left parties have also called for an all-India protest on December 22nd.
