Trinamool Rebel Bloc To Merge With Nationalist Citizens Party: Kakoli Ghosh
A 20-strong faction of the Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha has merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party, a regional Bengali-oriented party from Tripura. The move will reduce Trinamool's strength in the lower house to eight MPs and deepen the existing crisis within the party. The rebels, led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, have pledged to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi within the NDA and sit separately in parliament. Senior Trinamool leader Madan Mitra criticized the move as "betrayal" while Abhishek Banerjee, parliamentary party chief of the Trinamool Congress, urged Speaker Om Birla not to accept the rebel group.
