40 years ago, June 6, 1986: Haryana ministry sworn in

Bansi Lal, the new chief minister of Haryana, swore in a 13-member, two-tier ministry and declared that Chandigarh would remain the state's capital for at least five years. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi planted a "Tree for Peace" at Indira Gandhi's memorial on World Environment Day, urging a nationwide movement to protect the environment. Violence erupted again in the Belgaum border region after protesters clashed with police, damaging property and injuring officers. In Sri Lanka, Tamil militants killed 16 people in Andankulam and abducted passengers from a bus traveling to Trincomalee.
