AAP, Congress raises concern over SIR in Punjab ahead of 2027 Assembly polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notification for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab and other states, prompting concerns from the Indian National Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party. The SIR exercise will involve door-to-door visits by both-level officers (BLOs) from June 25 to July 24, 2026. The AAP alleged that constitutional institutions under the BJP rule are being misused for political advantage, while the Congress expressed concerns about the timing of the exercise ahead of the upcoming Punjab assembly elections. The Haryana Chief Electoral Officer announced a similar SIR campaign in Haryana with a qualifying date of July 1, 2026.
