Insult to Mahatma Gandhi: Opposition attacks Centre over new rural jobs law
Congress and Trinamool Congress leaders raised concerns about the new rural employment law, the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, 2025. They questioned the rationale behind removing the name of "Mahatma Gandhi" and criticized the government's move as an attempt to dismantle the rights-based framework of the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. CPI(M) leader MA Baby argued that the bill aims to shift responsibility for rural welfare onto states, potentially worsening rural distress.
