T.N. Assembly election 2026: Slow progress of infrastructure work, unemployment frustrate voters of Mayiladuthurai constituency

K. Murugan, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers’ Association, and other residents have raised concerns about slow infrastructure development, limited industrial growth, and gaps in public services in the Mayiladuthurai district. The closure of the Nadippisai Pulavar K.R. Ramaswamy Co-operative Sugar Mills (NPKR) has negatively impacted the local economy. Residents also highlighted issues with civic infrastructure, including delays in the underground sewerage project and the ineffective Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Bus Stand. Anjali Devi from the Fisher Women Federation in Mayiladuthurai pointed out the lack of basic amenities at the Sitharkadu dry fish market. Social activists have raised concerns about healthcare gaps, employment opportunities, and housing issues. The upcoming election for the Mayiladuthurai Assembly constituency is expected to be closely contested between the Congress, PMK, and other parties.
