Poll-bound Assam approves 3% quota for ‘tea tribes’ in Class I and II jobs

The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved a proposal to reserve 3% of Class I and Class II government jobs for the "tea tribes" and Adivasi community. This decision is seen as a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections expected in April. The cabinet also approved the release of the Entrepreneurship Fund to women self-help groups under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan, along with the construction of a second Sainik School in Karbi Anglong district. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog presented the vote-on-account Budget for the initial months of financial year 2026-27, highlighting the expansion of cash schemes like Nijut Moina and Orunodoi to benefit more families and vulnerable groups. The state is also poised to become a ₹10 lakh crore economy by 2028.
