The election comes after a student-led movement ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of Bangladesh’s independence movement, was assassinated in 1975. The country has experienced turbulent political shifts since its independence from Pakistan in 1971, with military intervention and fragile democratic institutions. Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate, led an interim administration after Hasina's removal. Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has ruled Bangladesh between 1996 and 2001 and again from 2009 until her ousting in 2024.
