Number of backward taluks rise in Karnataka, 93 classified most backward, 36 more backward, 43 backward

The Karnataka Regional Imbalances Redressal Committee (2026), headed by economist M. Govinda Rao, has released its report identifying 93 taluks as the most backward and 61 new taluks in the state. The report highlights a widening of regional imbalances despite overall economic progress, with north Karnataka experiencing the highest concentration of backward taluks. Despite increased spending on infrastructure deficit in backward taluks, the committee found poor implementation and inadequate allocation to district-level expenditure. The report recommends an additional allocation of ₹43,914 crore for the backward taluks and districts.
