Kerala Assembly: Opposition walks out as Speaker rejects adjournment motion on Payyannur martyr fund row, political violence
Allegations of a scam and political violence warrant urgent attention.
The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) walked out of the Kerala Legislative Assembly after their adjournment motion on alleged Payyannur CPI(M) martyr fund scam and ensuing political violence was disallowed. Speaker A.N. Shamseer ruled that the issue did not meet the required urgency for a suspension of House proceedings. The UDF, led by Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, protested the decision, alleging government pressure to avoid discussion on an issue that puts the CPI(M) on the defensive. Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of mishandling whistleblower allegations and using violence against those who expose corruption within their ranks. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan responded by stating the protest should not be viewed as a protest against the government, emphasizing that the SIT is operating under the supervision of the Kerala High Court.
