Indore water contamination: 20 new diarrhoea cases detected during screening; 142 in hospitals
Large-scale water contamination causing illness and death is a serious public health crisis.
An outbreak of diarrhea in Indore, India, has hospitalized 142 people, including 11 in intensive care units. The National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (NIRBI), affiliated with the Indian Council of Medical Research, is assisting the health department in containing the outbreak. The administration confirmed six deaths, prompting protests from the Congress party demanding the resignation of Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya. A sub-divisional magistrate was suspended for allegedly copying a Congress memorandum into an official order. Rajendra Singh, a water conservationist and recipient of the Magsaysay Award, has called the incident a "system-created disaster" due to corruption in drinking water infrastructure.
