
Nihang attacker strikes Sikh leader Sukhbir Singh Badal with kirpan at gurdwara
On August 13, Sukhbir Singh Badal, Shiromani Akali Dal president and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, was attacked with a kirpan at Mata Sahib Devan Ji Gurdwara in Nanded by Jaspal Singh, a 62-year-old Nihang serving there. Badal underwent surgery for hand injuries; the investigation continues. Nihangs, known for their distinctive blue robes and martial appearance, were prominent during recent protests and trace origins to Guru Gobind Singh's Khalsa creation in 1699.
