Durai, Director, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, explained that this interaction caused enhanced moisture incursion and strong onshore winds, leading to widespread low and mid-level clouds. Residents reported a sandstorm at Marina Beach, while Sunday is expected to be cloudy with heavy rain possible in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu and surrounding regions.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a Nowcast bulletin predicting light to moderate rain over several districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in some areas. The RMC also forecasts heavy rain and thunderstorms in isolated places across various districts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions on Sunday.

Bay system to trigger wet spell, ease heat in Tamil Nadu for next few days
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Theni on Saturday. D.S. Pai, Head of the RMC, Chennai, stated that the well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will persist for the next few days, bringing relief from the heat with moderate rainfall expected across the state until May 19th. The weather system is also expected to improve conditions for the advancement of the Southwest monsoon over parts of south Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
School education index: Kerala betters grade, score
Despite the denial of funds by the Union government, Kerala has improved its performance in the Union Ministry of Education’s Performance Grading Index 2.0 for States/Union Territories (UT) for the year 2024-25. The state received a Prachesta-2 grade, an improvement from Prachesta-3 in 2023-24, with scores rising from 594.2 to 687.7. Kerala achieved the topmost Utkarsh grade (72.8-80) in access and the Uttam-1 grade (81-90.9) in teacher education and training, among other achievements. The report highlights Kerala's progress despite challenges, including a lack of funding from the Union government.
SC asks Centre to consider States’ pleas for funds for CCTVs in police stations
The Supreme Court urged the Union government to fully implement the Assistance to States and Union Territories for Modernisation of Police (ASUMP) scheme, which provides funds for installing CCTV cameras in police stations and a centralized monitoring dashboard. The court expressed concerns over non-functional CCTV cameras in Udaipur police stations and directed the Centre to consider requests from states for funding. The ASUMP scheme has been extended until September 30, 2026, with most states initiating steps towards compliance. However, Jharkhand was criticized for not installing any CCTV cameras, despite receiving funds under the scheme. The court also cautioned against releasing funds without due diligence to prevent misappropriation.
ECI set to roll out phase III of SIR in ‘coming days’ to cover 22 States, UTs
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to begin phase three of its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter list process in the coming days, covering nearly 40 crore electors across 17 states and five UTs. This follows completion of SIR in 10 states and three UTs previously, which has successfully removed over 60 lakh deceased voters from the rolls. The ECI had initially delayed the rollout due to Assembly elections in several states but is now proceeding with the revision process. C. Joseph Vijay, a former Tamil cinema star, was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Joining him are nine other ministers: N. Anand, K.A. Sengottaiyan, Aadhav Arjuna, K.G. Arunraj, C.T.R. Nirmalkumar, A. Rajmohan, P. Venkataramanan, T.K. Prabhu, and S. Keerthana. These ministers were sworn in alongside Vijay, who has been elected from the Perambur and Tiruchi East constituencies.
