Probe Agency ED Raids 6 Bengaluru Crypto Firms Over Rs 2,500-Crore Violations
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) conducted searches at six locations in Bengaluru as part of an investigation into alleged large-scale violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) involving cross-border money transfers through Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs). The agency alleges that five companies operating crypto payment and remittance platforms, including Transak Technology India Pvt Ltd, Carretx Technologies Pvt Ltd, Mokshagna Technologies Pvt Ltd, Buyhatke Internet Pvt Ltd, and Abhibha Technologies Pvt Ltd, were facilitating unauthorized international money transfers without RBI authorization. The ED claims these companies advertised instant cross-border money transfers through cryptocurrencies, bypassing mandatory compliance requirements such as purpose codes and FIRCs while routing transactions through related entities in foreign jurisdictions. The investigation revealed a common modus operandi where customers deposit funds into company bank accounts, which are then used to purchase virtual digital assets, sold on Indian exchanges, and distributed to beneficiaries.
