Old BS-III vehicles face rubber part replacements due to E20 petrol impact
On July 29, 2026, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, informed Rajya Sabha that BS-III vehicles from April 1, 2005 to 2016 may require rubber part and gasket replacements due to E20 petrol's impact on plastic and elastomer materials. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) found in a 2021 study that E20 causes hardening, loss of strength, and swelling in seals, hoses, and fuel parts made from PVC/NBR, Epichlorohydrin, PBT, and PA66. This necessitates routine servicing for older vehicles to manage material degradation caused by the higher ethanol blend.
