Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Rs 16 Crore Flood Relief, Rejects International Aid
On Tuesday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam's Chief Minister, announced flood relief materials worth Rs 16 crore from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati. The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) distributed around 1.8 lakh mekhela chadors, T-shirts, and mosquito nets to affected families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Although floodwaters have receded, damaged homes and roads continue to hamper normalcy. Sarma emphasized the need for recovery efforts including medical camps, house surveys, and discussions with banks for relief measures. He dismissed international assistance, stating that local government resources are sufficient. Sarma also highlighted the necessity of a detailed study on water flow from Nagaland into Assam to address recurring floods.
