TVK Faces ₹90,500 Crore Deficit, Echoing 1952 Fiscal Crisis

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government faces a fiscal challenge similar to the one faced by the first post-Independence Congress government led by C. Rajagopalachari in 1952, struggling to balance welfare schemes with financial prudence despite increased budgetary outlays. In 1958, Finance Minister C. Subramaniam reported a ₹3.59 crore deficit for the year ending 1952-53; now, the TVK regime predicts this year’s revenue deficit could reach roughly ₹90,500 crore. The new government's first Budget is expected to be presented in the Assembly soon.
