Striking Staff and MGNREGA Workers Protest, Halting New Scheme Launch in Punjab

The Viksit Bharat-Guarantee Rozgar Aajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM G), which replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) on July 1, has faced implementation issues in Punjab due to a strike by around 2,100 staff since June 1. Protesters, including Technical Assistants and Computer Assistants, demand salary regularisation and payment of pending wages. Despite opposition from the AAP government, the transition began quietly in January. The strike intensified on June 26 when protesters attempted to march towards Rural Development Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond's residence; police used force to disperse them, causing injuries. MGNREGA workers also joined the protest after not receiving work under VB-G RAM G. Officials admit the strike has significantly impacted the scheme’s launch and acknowledge pending salaries but claim funds are being pursued from the Centre.
