Kerala Electricity Minister Announces Likely Continuation of Power Curbs After 6 p.m

Sunny Joseph, Kerala's Electricity Minister, announced that power curbs after 6 p.m. will likely continue due to a weak southwest monsoon and increased national demand linked to El Niño. The state faces a 500 MW to 600 MW deficit, with peak demand rising from 3500 MW in July 2025 to 4600-4800 MW this year. Storage in hydel reservoirs is at 29%, compared to 60% last year. The government urged consumers to reduce evening power use and criticized the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) for past failures.
