On June 29, Assam police arrested land rights activist Pranab Doley in Guwahati. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal conspiracy and rioting among other offenses related to protests against proposed luxury hotels near Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. Opposition leaders criticized the arrest, viewing it as politically motivated. Doley, 40, had contested the Assembly election from Bokakhat constituency.
