Mufti duo under house detention ahead of Martyrs’ Day in Kashmir
Preemptive house detention of political figures ahead of a memorial day raises concerns about suppression of dissent.
On July 12, ahead of Martyrs’ Day on July 13, Iltija Mufti and her mother, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house detention in Kashmir. Iltija claimed this in a video message, questioning the government's claims of normalcy. Last year, similar restrictions were imposed, stopping Chief Minister Omar Abdullah from visiting a cemetery. Bashaarat Masood reported this for The Indian Express on July 12, 2026.
