All 22 crest gates of Tunga dam at Gajanur opened to release excess water

The Upper Tunga project officials opened all 22 crest gates of the Tunga reservoir at Gajanur near Shivamogga, Karnataka on July 6 to release excess water. The water level reached its maximum on July 4 due to heavy rain in the catchment area and inflow increased significantly, prompting officials to increase outflow from 43,305 cusecs to 200 TMC of water has been discharged since June 1, most of it in the last three days. Heavy rainfall in Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts led to school closures on July 7 as authorities declared holidays for schools and colleges in select taluks due to heavy downpour.
