West Bengal Cabinet approves panel to examine draft Uniform Civil Code Bill
The West Bengal Cabinet approved the formation of a committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. The four-week committee will review the legislation and submit its recommendations before being presented to the Assembly in August. The proposed UCC is expected to address issues like polygamy, gender parity in ancestral property rights, child marriage, live-in relationships, and registrations. Opposition from both factions of the Trinamool Congress has been vocal, with Mamata Banerjee calling for opposition within and outside the assembly.
