Two sisters from Anand district, India, were rescued by Lao police after being held hostage in Laos for a year. The sisters had been taken to Myanmar against their will and then sent to Laos via Cambodia. The incident was the result of an urgent diplomatic intervention by the Indian Embassy in Laos and coordinated efforts between the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy. Anand BJP MP Mitesh Patel, who requested the rescue, stated that the sisters were subjected to torture and confinement. The sisters were brought back to India on Friday after being rescued from the Houaphan Province.
