Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, oversaw the breakthrough of the 13.14 km long Zojila tunnel, calling it a "gamechanger" for national security and integration. The tunnel, Asia's longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at an altitude of 11,578 ft, was completed at a cost of ₹6,800 crore despite an initial estimate of ₹12,000 crore. Omar Abdullah, J&K Chief Minister, and Manoj Sinha, J&K Lieutenant Governor, also attended the ceremony expressing their support for the project's benefits to the region.
