Calcutta High Court to hear Abhishek’s plea seeking protection

Abhishek Banerjee, general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, was granted permission by the Calcutta High Court to file a petition seeking protection against coercive action from the West Bengal CID. The court is expected to hear the matter later this week. The legal team representing Mr. Banerjee argued that he had no connection to the case, while Enforcement Directorate officials served him with a notice for questioning in the primary teacher recruitment scam. Two Trinamool MLAs filed a complaint alleging forged signatures on a letter declaring Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the party's choice for Leader of Opposition (LoP), leading to an FIR and summons against Mr. Banerjee. The controversy has caused a split within the party, with at least 58 MLAs forming a new opposition group.
