This decision sparked criticism from opposition members who questioned the lack of tendering process and alleged conflict of interest. The BMC defended its move, stating the appointment was based on technical expertise and ease of execution, while also claiming it saved costs compared to other consultants. Standing committee chairman Prabhakar Shinde directed the administration to halt proposals for consultant appointments unless they require specialized expertise.
