Split wide open: On the AIADMK, Tamil Nadu politics
The AIADMK, the principal opposition party in Tamil Nadu, is facing a split after a second consecutive election defeat. C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has indicated his support for the dissident group led by former Ministers C.Ve. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani. The dissidents have announced their intention to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The Palaniswami camp claims that all 47 legislators gave written consent for Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the AIADMK legislature party leader, citing a Supreme Court verdict in the Shiv Sena case. The Assembly Speaker will need to assess the merits of both groups' claims and may soon have to draw on his experience and legal advice.
