Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously elected leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party's legislature party in West Bengal following their victory in the recent assembly elections. Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, presided over the meeting and supported Adhikari's nomination. The BJP secured 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress won 80. Adhikari then met with Governor R.N. Ravi to formally stake his claim to form a government.
