Hegseth says clock paused on deadline to seek approval for Iran war

Hegseth, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and senior administration officials have stated that the 60-day clock for seeking congressional approval for the US-Israeli war with Iran has paused due to a ceasefire in effect since early April. However, Democratic senators argue that the War Powers Resolution requires the cessation of hostilities within 60 days unless Congress approves an extension. Despite this, administration officials claim the hostilities have terminated and no exchange of fire has occurred between the US and Iran since April 7th. The conflict sparked after US and Israeli strikes on Iran killed the country's supreme leader, prompting Iranian retaliation against Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf.
