West Bengal election 2026: Record turnout of over 92% in first phase amidst isolated incidents of violence

West Bengal registered a record voter turnout of 92.03% in the first phase of Assembly elections on April 23, 2026. The high turnout was attributed to the election being seen as a fight for voting rights and the potential implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated voters and praised the Election Commission of India (ECI) for ensuring a peaceful election. Despite the record turnout, isolated incidents of violence were reported across different districts, including clashes between supporters of political parties and attacks on BJP candidates. The second phase of polling will be held on April 29th.
