Kerala’s election outcome could redefine IUML’s political path

The outcome of the Kerala Assembly elections on May 4th is crucial for the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key constituent in the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The party faces a pivotal test as it navigates potential scenarios including a CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) victory, a UDF comeback, or a fractured mandate with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerging as a disruptive force. Despite having the eligibility for ministerial positions, the IUML has clarified its intention to not seek them if the UDF returns to power and will play a more proactive role in coalition affairs. The party's anxiety stems from the absence of the old guard that once balanced Congress factions and the potential for a hung Assembly. The IUML is expected to remain in the Opposition unless the results lead to a clear mandate for the UDF or a hung Assembly, where it may consider aligning with the LDF.
