When an unknown 29-year-old took on K. Kamaraj in 1962

P. Ramamoorthy, a 92-year-old resident of Sattur, Tamil Nadu, contested against then Chief Minister K. Kamaraj in the 1962 Assembly election. Ramamoorthy, who was inspired by speeches of Thevar, joined the Swatantra Party and became its nominee for Sattur. Despite facing pressure from his community and fear of a rigged election, Ramamoorthy lost to Kamaraj by a significant margin. However, he later gained recognition for his courage and ultimately served in Parliament. Ramamoorthy has remained politically engaged throughout his life, continuing to vote in elections.
