When an unknown 29-year-old took on K. Kamaraj in 1962

P. Ramamoorthy, a 92-year-old resident of Sattur, Tamil Nadu, contested against then Chief Minister K. Kamaraj in the 1962 Assembly election despite facing pressure from his community and family. Though he lost to Kamaraj by a significant margin, he was later acquitted of a false case brought against him after his electoral challenge. In 1967, Ramamoorthy won a seat in Parliament as part of the Swatantra Party's alliance with the DMK. He remained active in politics until he retired from electoral contests in 1973.
