BJP fields R.G. Kar victim’s mother from Panihati in West Bengal Assembly polls
Exploiting a victim's tragedy for political gain is deeply concerning.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the names of 19 more candidates for West Bengal Assembly seats on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The party fielded the mother of Abhaya, a doctor who was raped and murdered in August 2024, from Panihati. Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition, and other BJP leaders had encouraged her to contest the election. Several political parties have been involved in the case, including the CPI(M), Trinamool Congress, and the CBI. West Bengal will hold its Assembly elections on April 23 and 29 with results announced on May 4.
