The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a new interpretation clarifying which cryptocurrencies are considered securities. The agency classified crypto tokens into five categories: digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. Paul Atkins, chair of the SEC, has proposed a safe harbor proposal for cryptocurrency companies to make it easier to sell tokens and raise money. This proposal includes an "innovation exemption" that would exempt companies from securities laws to allow them to engage in new business models.
