Ahead of Id, NC seeks release of Kashmiris booked under UAPA for protesting Khamenei killing

Scores of youths in Kashmir have been booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for allegedly participating in protests following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. The arrests have sparked concerns from National Conference (NC) legislators who met with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The NC delegation demanded the withdrawal of these cases before the upcoming religious holiday of Id. They argue that the arrests are disproportionate and may be counterproductive to achieving peace in the region. The NC memorandum, signed by several legislators including Tanvir Sadiq and Hilal Akbar Lone, highlights that while mourning gatherings for Khamenei have been held peacefully across India, individuals in Kashmir are facing criminal charges under the UAPA and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The memorandum emphasizes that these arrests set a concerning precedent by targeting mourners for expressing grief. The NC leaders also point out the lack of legal action against similar gatherings held in other cities across India, arguing that this disparity undermines equal citizenship and protection under the law. Sinha, listening to the demands of the delegation, promised to review the cases before Id. He assured the legislators that he would ensure the release of those arrested for participating in these mourning gatherings. The NC leaders expressed hope that these arrests will be withdrawn.
