LDF steals a march on UDF by naming candidates within an hour of Kerala poll date announcement

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) announced its candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly election on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The announcement came within an hour of the Election Commission of India (ECI) declaring April 9 as the poll date. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan and CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam held separate press conferences to unveil the candidates, signaling a coordinated effort by the LDF. The alliance will field 81 candidates, including six independent candidates backed by the CPI(M). The list includes incumbent Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, LDF convenor T.P. Ramakrishnan, and several Cabinet Ministers. AIDWA leader P K Shyamala will contest from Thaliparambu in Kannur. The LDF also announced that 56 of the candidates are incumbents, including former Devaswom Board Minister Kadakampally Surendran. The announcement came as a response to the United Democratic Front (UDF)'s efforts to finalize seat-sharing within its coalition. Facing potential pressure from the LDF, the UDF held a closed-door meeting on Sunday between V.D. Satheeshan and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, with the Indian Union Muslim League leadership at Aluva Palace in Ernakulam. The meeting was crucial as the IUML is reportedly demanding more seats, including some in central Kerala, to expand its political base and demonstrate its influence within the UDF. The ongoing seat-sharing negotiations have also been complicated by K. Sudhakaran's assertion that he will contest from Kannur.
