India's Ministry of Home Affairs has released prominent Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk after six months in jail. Wangchuk, who had been arrested for protesting against the lack of statehood and protection for his region’s tribal communities, was detained under India’s National Security Act (NSA). He had been on a hunger strike demanding either full federal statehood or constitutional protections for Ladakh's people, land, and environment. Wangchuk was released from jail in Jodhpur on Saturday and the fate of his wife's legal challenge to his detention remains unclear.
