Maharashtra has over 1.45 crore students in its 1.04 lakh primary schools, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26. The number of primary and upper primary schools increased slightly from 2023-24, but the percentage of schools in rural areas decreased. The pupil teacher ratio also improved, falling from 31.1 to 30:1. Maharashtra is implementing several programs for child welfare and nutrition through schemes like the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. The share of the child budget in the state budget increased from 12.9% to 13.3%.
