He served as Tamil Nadu State secretary of the CPI for three tenures since 1992 and was known for his tireless campaign against sand mining. He also led a Public Interest Litigation to secure a stay order against illegal sand mining from the Thamirabarani river basin. M.K. Stalin, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, expressed condolences on Nallakannu's passing.
