Estimates notwithstanding, T.N. government is hopeful of sticking to fiscal norms

The Tamil Nadu government has presented fiscal indicators for 2026-27 that are optimistic despite the state experiencing "severe fiscal stress" due to factors like GST rate rationalization and Union government actions. The estimates show favorable results in areas such as gross fiscal deficit, revenue deficit to GSDP ratio, and interest payment to revenue receipts. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu highlighted the impact of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam program on increased expenditure, while also pointing out the state's efforts to manage electricity subsidies and losses incurred by the TNPDCL. Despite these challenges, officials remain optimistic about achieving targets due to past fiscal management successes.
